Android Experiments is a group of installations focused on creating physical interactions that show of features of Android. I worked on this for Deeplocal, who was commissioned by Google Creative Lab to build this project. For this project I designed, fabricated, and installed the IOIO Plotter, a large scale polargraph drawing machine that is able to draw 72 individual portraits. An android phone is used to take a photo of a subject and performs the computer vision processing to create the drawing. The phone communicates with a IOIO micro-controller that drives the motors to position the carriage and draw the image. One of the most interesting technical challenges of this project was building a battery powered, wireless carriage using an RF relay (similar to those used in garage doors) to activate an on-board solenoid to lift the pen without adding any extra wires.
